New windows in a Listed Chapel & School House in Wiltshire
Project Overview
For this unique project, we were commissioned to replace timber windows in an old chapel and school house that had been vacant for many years and fallen into a state of disrepair. The buildings were listed, and the new owner sought to convert the chapel into his personal home and the school house into a property for his son.
We were tasked with creating bespoke timber windows that would respect the buildings’ historical integrity while also improving energy efficiency. The project involved working closely with the client and conservation officers to ensure all new windows met the stringent requirements for listed buildings.
The Challenge
The chapel and school house were both listed buildings, which meant any alterations to the property had to be approved by conservation and planning officers. The challenge was to design windows that adhered to the strict requirements while preserving the buildings’ original charm.
We collaborated directly with the customer, who used the drawings we produced to work with his conservation officer. This partnership ensured the windows we created met all the necessary guidelines for listed buildings, while also delivering the modern functionality the family needed.
We were contracted to replace and install:
- Fixed timber double-glazed arched windows
- Large arched timber box sash windows on traditional ropes and weights
These windows were manufactured in our Wiltshire-based factory by our skilled team. They were made in hardwood and fitted with double-glazed units, perfect for meeting modern thermal standards without compromising the building’s historic integrity.
To ensure long-lasting durability, we applied three coats of microporous paint (two base coats and a top coat which was colour matched to the customer’s chosen colour). This paint finish is not only aesthetically pleasing but also allows the timber to breathe, maintaining the building’s historical appearance while providing protection from the elements.
The Results
The installation of these bespoke windows was a crucial part of the chapel and school house conversion. Our expert craftsmanship and attention to detail allowed the windows to fit seamlessly into the property’s historical aesthetic, while the modern glazing technology improved energy efficiency and comfort.
The client was extremely pleased with the results, noting that the windows not only enhanced the property’s visual appeal but also brought the buildings into the 21st century with energy-efficient solutions. Thanks to our detailed work and collaboration with the conservation officer, the windows passed all necessary checks and were approved without any revisions.
